New plant models for temperate biome levels
Apart from the new level terrain, (which is coming along nicely!) I have also spent a bit of time creating new plant models for the temperate biomes. I reworked my round bushes to something more final, made more fern variants, and even made some clover and rhubarb inspired ones. I want to tweak the colour a bit at some point, as the bright green plants stick out a lot at the moment. I do want to have some nice contrast though, as it helps players locate specific resources more easily. I wanted to make the plants have a nice rounded footprint, as it makes it easier to distinguish individual plants from each other. The larger surface area also makes it easier to hit these resources, and the plant size variety makes for a better visual too.
I am using a fairly advanced foliage shader for the plants inside Unity, which I might cover the process for in the future. It took a few days to figure out how to do the “tool textures” for them, as it is a combination of normal, translucency and roughness mapping, which requires you to extract certain layers and stitch them back together. Since I am using Krita instead of Photoshop, the procedure has changed quite a bit, though for the better I would argue. For today though, I will leave you with some plants :)
